Self taught beauty

Thompson

I can say I have considered myself a self taught photographer since 2008. I didn’t take my first actual photography class until this semester. It has been a long process and error road.

Kyle Thompson is the same way. Thompson wanted to become a photographer but his anxiety prevented him from talking to people, so that is when he started shooting self portraits. (you can read the rest of the article here)

Thompson’s photographs convey a sense of dread, but are also very surreal. Much of his work has been DIY projects where he has created scenes out of every day materials.

Freelensing: A learning process.

About a week and a half ago I introduced a new technique called “Freelensing” (you can see the post here). I had also said I would post my attempts at freelensing.

It is much harder than what I expected. Especially the tilt/shift effect that you can achieve with freelensing. Although, this was my first attempt. I am please with the lighting that I got with these photos. I’m going to keep practicing and see if I can a more tilt/shift effect with more photos. Hopefully I can then post a more successful post about freelensing.

Freelensing

Thanks to things like Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator, it has become easy for photographers to rely on these programs to create an image they want, rather than spending more time on the actual subject to create an image.

I found an article a few months ago on Lukeroberts about a new technique called freelensing.

Basically what you do is detach the lens from your camera and hold it against the camera, then you slowly move left to right, or up and down to focus the lens. You only move the lens just a few millimeters in any direction to get this effect:

Freelensing can make effects like tilt-shift, a more macro effect, or give you awesome dust and sun leaks sense the lens is detached from the camera.

I’m really intrigued by this idea, so hopefully this weekend I will try this and post my photos next week!

Natural State

This past semester I have been focusing my photography on the human form and how people interact with daily life, I have also become with the idea of showing people in their natural state.  I’ve been studying photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson and Gary Winnogrand and their candid shots of people. Recently I have discovered an amazing photographer Laura Pannack, most of her work is presented in a social documentary/ portraiture.

Glass” In this series, Pannack puts a piece of glass in front of her subjects and has them close their eyes, she also doesn’t tell them when she is going to take their photograph.

From her series “Young Love” Pannack studies how people interact  in a relationship and how we use relationships to discover ourselves and what we want in a partner.

Laura Pannack ‘s work has a sense of tension and a small sense of darkness to her photographs. She builds a relationship with her subjects which in turn, helps her capture these moments of the true human form and emotion.

The cat’s meow

Okay, terrible pun I know. I’m working on perfecting my title names. So just hang in there.

I hope everyone’s Tuesday is going by swimmingly, I just thought I would share  the most adorable duo on designtaxi.com captured by Russian photographer Andy Prokh of his daughter and their British short hair.

Let’s just take a moment to bask in the overwhelming cuteness!

If I were an animal, what would I wear?

As I was exploring around https://www.stumbleupon.com (which if you haven’t heard of already, is probably the coolest website in the world.) and I, every pun intended, “stumbled upon” a really cool post about a Spanish photographer named Miguel Vallinas. He has recently started a new series called “Second Skins” in which he has morphed animals into a semi human form. Which you can see here: Imagehttp://www.miguelvallinas.com/galerias/ultimos_trabajos/segundas_pieles/index.html

But, what makes Vallinas’s work so interesting is that he also tried imagining what the animal would wear, if it was in fact human. I think these are some really cool photographs. You can check out the rest of Vallinas’s work here at his website: http://www.miguelvallinas.com/ultimos_trabajos.php

enjoy!
